We will drive for miles to find gasoline for our cars that is $.10 cheaper but to often I find that business owners do very little or no due diligence when it comes to comparing costs for their web site hosting and email. The savings can range anywhere from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars a month - yes a month. For most small businesses, the need for high priced services is just not needed.
Over my career as a business technology consultant - I have found a local Chamber was paying over $500 per month for their web hosting and that paying $20 per month w/one email account is very common. (Additional email accounts extra) Part of the challange is that most people just don't shop around! Another is that their web site was not designed for "them" to update it themselves. Also, "bundling" the hosting costs with other services makes it much more difficult to determine what you are actually paying for & at what price.
Don't get me wrong - some businesses NEED a more sophisicated hosting service provider and incur the costs - but that just doesn't seem to be the case with so many small businesses.
There are reliable hosting companies that will host your web site for $150 for 2 years unlimited email accounts to use as a comparison.
This is a small drip in the profit bucket but by watching the nickles & dimes - the dollars will take care of themselves, especially in a downturn economy.
