When a business is looking to upgrade their software & system or take a good look under the covers, especially relating to security breaches within their existing system, many are either conducting a business process review & analysis to use as a base line for software product comparisons. For the security items, an IT security audit is becoming more popular.
Both of these forms of "analysis'" endeavors can be done at a variety of levels and for almost any budget. By documenting what "exactly" your internal business processes are today is a great way to also identify obvious fixes (low hanging fruit) that may be addressed imemdiately.
When evaluating software products, you can use your existing business processes as a comparison guide for the functional features of a new product. It is important to remember that to maximize the utilization of the new software and obtain a greater ROI - you MUST be open to changing some of the "OLD WAYS" of doing business. My realigning those processes to easily accomodate the built in features of the software will not only increase you rusage of the software ASAP but will help you migrate further towards e-Business methods.
For security issues, hopefully you will learn about a few "holes" versus re-invent the wheel. These small but important changes can help you keep your security somewhat current with the velocity of new products & the issues they create. Depending on the size of your organization - system - problems - etc., this may be a good idea to conduct annually.
Good Luck & success!
