For those of you that like to cut your own technology paths, LINUX has been a good avenue to consider. Having its origin of being designed and developed by numerous contributors across the globe, it was designed to be a FREE alternative to the norm with a very open architecture.
With all the benefits, only a small percentage of businesses use LINUX and alot of that is due to the marketing or anti-marketing of large global software developers who obviously don't like the idea of a FREE open architecture...go figure.
The second biggest issue is that people just don't understand it...except for the techy types. It is not for everyone but understanding and being better educated on the options you have creates a better business decision and a better ROI.
SQL servers are becoming (if not already) the norm for many software products and there is a LINUX server alternative....called PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL is a database server like Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or IBM's DB/2, with the exception that it is developed in an open and collaborative fashion much like the Linux kernel is developed. It has had a long history of bringing innovative new features to the scene.
I am not promoting LINUX but I am promoting knowledge...and the more you understand about the technology around you, the better your decisions and business will be.
