We all remember when the Eastern US Power Grid failed a few years back and basically the east coast had little/no power for a couple of days. Just in our buildings or communities does the power go out - for even a minute or to - more often than we would like.
Although there is not much we can do about upgrading the power grid and preventing another major power outage - you can bet on that - there is something we can do to protect our technology investments and most importantly our data. It may be one of the least expensive technology related items we buy.
What I am referring to is a "surge protector". In my numerous visits to businesses, I have noticed too many "power strips" being used instead of surge protectors - they are dramatically different and a power strip offers you little/no protection of a power surge spike ripping through your electornics and frying them - that includes refrigerators - let alone servers & PC's.
Simply, a "surge protector" is designed to create an "open" in the circuit when a surge occurs and stops the power surge from going any further...a power strip will not. The surge protector may get fried but hopefully nothing else will - that depends on the volts in/of the surge. For example if it is a lightning strike...pray.
You can find power strips for as low as $5, were a surge protector may run between $20-$30. I would still rather replace a $30 fried surge protector than a $1000 PC or a $6000 Server or worse yet try and replace my data.
I suggest that you take a look under your desks/cubicles to find out exactly what you have for surge/power spike protection and buy yourself true surge protectors for Xmas - your electronics will love it...and so will you!
