Is it coincidence that a meeting we dread to attend will leave us dissatisfied and angry? That a sales call we were forced to make never turns out to be productive? How come that we always leave bored a networking meeting we did not want to attend in the first place?
Have you experienced any of this? Guess what ... it's your mindset which creates this dissatisfactory outcome. Or, as Brian Tracey, the famous sales trainer and writer of more than 40 books, put it in a recent presentation in Cleveland: "wherever your attitude goes, your life follows". Successful people get up in the morning and basically have two choices: to be happy or to be very happy. What's your choice and why is it so important?
During the day you will encounter a flurry of events. If you are in a "happy" mood, you will more often than not form a positive perception of the event like:
- Great that I have a chance to talk to that client
- Wow, they asked me for advice
- Another opportunity for building a better relationship
- What an opportunity for using my problem solving skills
Your perception of the situation will shape your feelings. So whether you feel angry or happy, honored or sacrificed, it's in a direct relation to your perception of the situation or event. And your feelings shape your behavior: withdrawn, avoidant, aloof, problem solving or excited and open to create different outcomes. And it's all up to you. The people you will interact with will judge your behavior and will form their perception of you. And you are correct; their perception of you will influence how they approach you. So, if you dread going into a meeting you will show your disinterest either by being withdrawn or by being aggressive and there will not be much possibility to create something new or find ways to improve anything in this meeting. Your perception will always be confirmed ... what a waste of time.
On the other hand, welcoming an event will show in your vocal (pitch of your voice, articulation, rate, volume) and in your visual (eye contact, body language) communication which make up 93% of the information we transmit. Consequently our verbal message makes up only 7% of the communication! Try it out and you have a high percentage chance that there will be a positive, sometimes even breakthrough, outcome created.
So when you get up in the morning and enter the office, remember the two choices: Be happy or be extremely happy! The possibilities you create in this mindset are endless and will show in all events you encounter in your personal as well in your professional life.
Please try it and please share with me your unexpected victories.
