In the previous goal articles we have looked at the needs to set goals; test questions in setting goals; and mistakes people make in goal setting.  As we finish this series, we are going to address what we need to do to accomplish our goals so we can be successful in all aspects of our lives.

• You must get a clear picture of what that goal is.

When we get a clear picture in our minds, we begin to think about how to accomplish that goal.  We begin to imagine what it would be like to achieve the goal.  A clear picture in your mind of what you want to accomplish is absolutely essential.  If it is foggy or hazy or you think you know, it will not work.  The clearer the picture, the more sensitive you will be, the more sensitive your mind will be to the opportunities around you, making it possible for you to establish your goals.  You need a clear picture, with an emotional feeling.

•  You must have the confidence to do it.

We must look at the goal and know we have the right to be confident and to believe we will succeed.

•  You must have a consuming desire.

The goals must consume us.  To consume us means it must possess us.  It is the driving motivation in us.

Desire =  to long and hope for something; a longing; a craving; conscious impulse toward an object or an experience.

That consuming desire is built on the basis of the value we place on achieving that goal, that motivates us to be possessed with a consuming desire to fulfill that task or goal.   It is a priority.  I'm willing to pay the price - discipline myself - deny myself of other things - go without some things to attain bigger things.

•  You must set a course of action.

The plan has the steps to help you achieve your goal.  You must set out to plan the steps which you can achieve your goals.

We should study, read, save then practice and learn all we can, so we will make a good impression when we reach our goal.

•  You must have a definite timetable.

Whatever your goal may be, if you don't put a time limit on it, you will never accomplish anything.  Many people are willing to set goals but they are not willing to set a time schedule, as they are afraid they will fail.  Just re-evaluate the time and set a new time frame.  Often it is in the failing of it that we learn.

Setting a goal, the time limit is a subconscious as well as a conscious visible motivation. If you put on your calendar you are going to accomplish a certain thing on a certain day and you see the days ticking off, that will motivate you get a move on, or to re-schedule to help you reach your goal.

•  You must have a cooperative spirit.

One of the real hindrances to people reaching their goals is their inability to get along with others, insisting on their own way, their egotism is not allowing them to compromise in any way.  You will never achieve much in life unless you are willing to get along with people.

This doesn't mean to compromise your convictions spiritually, ethically or morally.  Compromising means the give and take in personal relationships because your desire to reach your goal is more important than getting your own way.

And you must be willing to help others achieve their goals. You must be willing to give as well as receive.  You must be willing to join hands with other people and motivate them. You must desire that others will reach their goals.  Anyone who has a goal worthy of achievement will always find someone willing to help them achieve that goal.

•  You must exercise the courage to act.

Have courage.  At times courage is required because sometimes what you must do is unpopular among your friends and relatives.

It may be you are moved from some place or occupation or habit in your life and there are people around you who challenge you and oppose you.  Keep this in mind when it comes to choosing your priorities.

Many a person has failed to reach their goal because they stopped two inches short of what they were to attain.  Never give up.  Just beneath where we stop is generally what we are looking for.  It takes courage to keep going when the people around you discourage you.  You must have the courage to make a commitment and the courage to keep on digging when everyone else is willing to stop.  It costs more to fail than to succeed.

•  You must be persistent.

One of the prime qualities of those who succeed is the quality of persistence.  This means you are willing to keep trying and to keep going.  Whatever you are heading to achieve, you are willing to persist, to tenaciously hold on, to have the determination to follow through whatever the price may be.

It is a powerful motivating factor within us.  If you are willing to hold on in spite of criticism, discouragement, handicaps, circumstances and keep your eye on the goal, you will succeed.

•  You must have a controlled attitude.

One of the primary ways to not meet a goal is to begin thinking and listening to negative attitudes. A person who is a pessimist goes backward, never forward.  All of us are tempted at times to be negative, but if we don't control this we are in trouble.

When thoughts come into our mind we choose what to accept and what to reject, because that thought entertained will become a part of us.  It is going to affect not only our thinking but our emotional being and reactive behavior. Settling the value of your objective has a tremendous capacity to control your thinking process.

Keep these nine steps in front of you.  Review them in a consistent basis and examine yourself.  Are you doing them?Don't listen to people who are failures all around you.  By going after your goals, not only will you achieve them but you will inspire, challenge, help and encourage others to reach their goals.

You have to choose a winning attitude.  When you are down and discouraged, wanting to give up and lose, don't give up. Make a commitment- "I close the book on all other alternatives.  As far as I'm concerned, there is no other way."  Keep a mental image before you of your finished dream.
