How do I get speaking or other engagements?

How do I get speaking or other engagements?
I am interested in getting into speaking at various events and for organizations, what is the process? Do I need to hire a PR person or create some sort of resume? Should I just send it out to various groups?

I run a business, so I only have so much time to devote to pursuing these endeavors, but I am very interested in doing regular appearances.

Depending on your industry, I would recommend joining some professional networking organizations and/or trade associations. If you belong to a Chamber of Commerce, including COSE, you can submit your information to www.cosepeereducator.com to be considered for future speaking engagements.

Have you spoken to groups before? Use those prior speaking engagements as leverage. Continue networking and broadening your circles of friends, colleagues, clients and prospect clients.

Hope this helps.

Speaking to groups can be a great way to promote your expertise in the marketplace. Here are some tips:
1. If you're not an articulate, dynamic and confident speaker already, look into ToastMasters. They can help you.
2. Determine what messages you could share that others would be interested in hearing. You can subtly promote your expertise, but no audience wants to hear a blatant infomercial from the platform.
3. Identify those groups who might like to hear what you have to say and that would be good exposure for you and your business.
4. Get to know the groups first by attending several meetings as a guest. Listen to the speakers at those events to see if your style and message would be compatible. If so, follow up with the group's leaders and offer your services.

Harnessing the Power of the Platform can be an effective and efficient strategy for self-marketing. But you need to do it right.
