How do you get invited to be on the board for organizations, non-profit and business?
I am curious how others get involved and "elected" to positions such as these?

A great place to start is with Business Volunteers Unlimited http://www.businessvolunteers.org/board.htm

Best of luck finding the nonprofit that meets your preferences and skills.

Find a professional or philanthropic group that relates to your personal or professional interests and passion. Get involved as a volunteer. Learn how the group works and what it needs. Give of your time, talent and treasure before you ever ask.

Once you've positioned yourself as a worthy personal and dedicated volunteer, then offer to take on a leadership role. Most organizations are desperate for new blood and willing volunteers.

In addition to finding the right organization as mentioned already, make an appointment to talk with the chief staff officer of the organization or a member of the organizations board officer team. Let them know of your interest and aspirations and the value you can bring. ask how the organization goes about developing board leadership. As noted as well, be willing to show your stuff on a committee or a task team so that the organization and you get to know each other better. Become known as a good resource to the staff and other volunteers and your name will surface as candidates for the board are discussed.
