A good starting point for starting a drug testing program is the Bureau of Worker's Compensation. They offer rate discounts if your program complies with their guidelines. More info here: http://www.ohiobwc.com/employer/forms/dfwp/default.asp

The Ohio BWC has offered the DFWP program to companies for about 11 years. Our company has been certified by the state as one of the consulting companies to help companies get into compliance.

You company would need to write a thorough policy. This is not a paragraph or two, but a well defined document outlining purpose, policies, testing prcedures, confidentiality, etc. We work closely with our clients to be sure all areas are addressed.

The BWC requires education training for all employees and supervisor training for proper implementation and documenting of the policy. We fully agree with this process as it puts everything on the table and both leadership and employees can feel more comfortable during the implementation. Outside trainers are recommended for this training as they are dedicated to this topic and keep up to date with law changes, drug trends, etc.

I have been conducting these trainings for 7 years all through Ohio. Once everyone understands the policy and how it works, overall the feedback is extremely positive for having this policy. Accident rates drop, productivity improves and morale improves.
