The amount of spam has increased by 70% this year alone and the spammers are getting smarter & smarter. I consider myself a fairly careful perosn when it comes to opening spam emails but I came close to getting fooled the other day.
What can happen? When you click & open a spam email, it is very likely to spider out your email address to numerous other entities but also potenially plant viruses or trojan viruses. This can even happen when visiting certain web sites. The end result can be a slower operating PC - lock ups or even spammers using your system to spam others. The last can get you "Gray or Black" listed with search engines and getting off those lists can be very difficult and time consuming.
A few sugggestions:
1. Frequently, clean out your PC / system for spyware - don't just wait till YOU KNOW there is a problem. Do this as part of yoru regular maintenance every day/week.
2. Make sure you have both spyware & virus protection and most importantly it is updated. For every virus & spyware upgrade - there is someone out there figuring out how to get around it NOW!
3. In some cases, you may be better off having a data tech reformat yoru PC (CLEAN HOUSE) and start fresh with some new maintenance efforts.
4. Preview-Preview-Preview and when in doubt DONT OPEN!!!!! Period.
5. Educate & train your staff and family - this will help the most!
We are already dependent on the internet and that will only increase - along with the "Bad People" who want to use it to do harm - DONT HELP THEM!
