Marcellus Shale- Energy Solution and the Environmental Threat
written on January 19, 2011 by Darrell Bragg
Waste Reduction, Recycling and Composting

The drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale rock formation that extends into eastern Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and West Virginia, creates both an economic boom for the states and for communities where the drilling is done.  This could provide a possible long-term and cleaner energy solution to using coal and oil.  Recent history tells us, however, that the environmental impact when human error and technology fail can be costly to local families and communities, and could be far more reaching if adequate safety oversight isn’t in place.

Waste Reduction, Recycling and Composting

On April 30th, 2009, over 50 stakeholders including businesses, haulers, and processors gathered at E4S to connect, learn, do food waste composting.  The meeting was a great success and helped to jump start food waste composting in NEO.  Food waste is a significant source of methane in landfills, a potent green house gas.  Composting food waste is much better than throwing it in the landfill!  A simple way to start at home or work is by throwing your coffee grinds on your acid loving rhododendrons, azaleas and blueberries!

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo made some major green by recycling.  In 2008, the zoo generated $12,860 by recycling more than 140 tons of materials ranging from cell phones to phonebooks.  Recycled materials included cardboard, paper, aluminum cans and all other metals, plastics numbered 1 and 2 and #4 shrink wrap, fluorescent bulbs, electronic waste, including toner cartridges, batteries, tires, and of course, animal wastes.  In 2008, the zoo also started using a solar-powered golf cart to carry materials and instituted a policy to greatly reduce vehicle traffic inside the zoo.

Waste Reduction, Recycling and Composting

Imagine a business with no dumpster for trash at the loading dock.  Imagine a process manufacturer with no drums or pallets stacked up outside behind its plant.  It must be a small one or two person office, not a manufacturer, right?  Wrong.  It is EZ Brite Brands, a Westlake, OH manufacturer of over 40 soaps and cleaning products that is fast approaching $1,000,000 in annual sales.  In the sustainability community, sometimes we forget how important the reduce and reuse parts of the reduce, reuse, recycle triad.  EZ Brite is a shining example of all three.
