The restaurant industry suffers from an extremely high employee turnover rate.  The high energy intensity of the industry also costs restaurants significantly.  Fortunately, there are steps that restaurants can take to curb these trends.  Working to proactively become more energy efficient and sustainable is one of the most effective solutions.  Locally, several restaurants have made strides to become more sustainable.  Perhaps none has done more than Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood.

Smart Grids Can Lower Peak Demand and Improve Energy Efficiency

One of the more controversial and complex pieces of the energy efficiency puzzle is the smart grid.  Currently, electricity is almost universally billed at the same price per kilowatt hour, regardless of the season or time of day.  This flat pricing model to the consumer hides the reality of electric consumption – it varies widely, based on the hour of day and the time of year.  Improved technology, like the smart grid, gives the utilities additional options to address this variability and flatten that usage curve.
