The pressure for small business owners to hop on the social media bandwagon is unrelenting. If all the advisors and experts are to be believed, social media is one of the most effective strategies for building a brand, promoting your product and connecting with customers. The obvious problem is, who’s got the time?

If learning and applying social media is still on your to-do list, that’s fine. You’ll get there, I’m sure. But meanwhile, know that the online conversation never stops, and people might be chatting about your business right now.

Whether people are complaining about your product or praising it, don’t you want to know? It’s up to you how to respond to a commenter. Perhaps you’ll show appreciation for a referral by giving the person a coupon or other discount. You can answer complainers directly, or post your own message.
Try these three free services and you’ll never be caught by surprise again.

Twilert.com — You’ll receive an e-mail message every time your business is mentioned on Twitter. How easy is that?

Google Alerts — You’ll receive an e-mail message every time your business is mentioned on news sites, blogs, video and discussions.

Social Mention.com — Instant search results of blogs, social networks microblogs, comments, video, news and more.
