Sharing web content through social media continues to be a growing trend. People trust recommendations from their friends and family over any other source on the web.

Google had dabbled in social media before when they launched Google Buzz. Google Buzz quickly fizzled out, but it managed to get the ball rolling for their new product, the Google +1 button.

Facebook users can simply click the “like” button to recommend a website page, video or article to their friends. Using Google +1 will be just as easy. Google users who are signed into their accounts can click the +1 button on websites or on the right side of search results to recommend websites, articles, advertisements and more. The endorsements will be seen by all of their signed-in contacts the next time they search for products or services like yours.

When it comes to maximizing the effectiveness of your advertising, what could be better than an endorsement from a potential customer’s friend or family member? Personal recommendations are valuable and can offer the extra bump that turns possible customers into actual customers.

How can the +1 button affect organic search listings? If your ad is shared, Google records its final landing page URL. When the same URL turns up in an organic search listing, the listing will contain the same personal annotations as an advertisement.

If a user gives your organic listing a +1, advertisements with the same landing page URL will include the same personal comments, increasing the probability of your ads getting noticed.

Whether the +1’s come from organic search, ads or buttons on publisher sites, they can affect organic search ranking. However, +1’s do not impact quality scores for ads and ad ranking.

Upon clicking the +1 button, the content will remain an archived recommendation for the user’s social circle. All links shared through Google +1 are also index in a user’s Google dashboard where they are stored for future use.
Google has utilized some of the best features of social media sites to help make search less about confusing algorithms and more about the desires and habits of real people. Google’s +1 button gives everyday users the power to influence the online activity of others.
