Where have I been? For quite some time, I’ve been a proponent of using video for marketing purposes and have written scripts to prove my point. But I had never heard the term lip dub as it relates to video until vacationing in Michigan recently.

My friend there told me how Grand Rapids’ local promotion genius, Rob Bliss, reacted to a January 2011 Newsweek article listing their hometown as one of America’s dying cities, quoting Mainstreet.com. Bliss immediately began to recruit hundreds of Grand Rapids citizens to lip synch Don McLean’s American Pie throughout the streets of their city.

The resulting video1 was released on YouTube.com in May. So far over 4 million people have viewed the video, drawing both praise (mostly) for the effort and positive national press for Grand Rapids.

Curious about whether companies had used lip-dub videos to capture attention, I found an entertaining one2 posted last month by residents of the Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids. Frolicking seniors make living at Clark look downright fun.

Further searching found a lip dub3 produced in May 2010 by the University of Vic in Spain that might have even been inspiration for Bliss. Over 900 students and faculty participated in this well choreographed video to Train’s Hey, Soul Sister. This video, an initiative of the school’s advertising and public relations students, has had over 1.5 million viewers to date. I wonder if enrollment increased.

This started me thinking about a lip dub produced by HR about what it’s like to work for a company. Check out the lip dub done by the cast of The Office in the 7th season premier4 for inspiration. Or, maybe you could promote your company’s products or services with a well-crafted lip dubbed video that could be part of your company website.

Searching for the right tune would be the first step, followed by obtaining permission to use it, of course. Recruiting people to participate would probably be a piece of cake!
