With the economic downturn and the countless lay offs over the last 12 months, the pool of available talented employees has gotten much bigger.  The challenge these days seems to be sorting through the sheer volume of resumes and possible candidates.  There are only so many hours in the day.

www.CareerBuilder.com, www.Monster.com and www.Dice.com are industry standards and still provide access to a wide array of candidates.  However, each site comes with a hefty price tag to access their resume databases.  If you are looking to find great talent among the newly unemployed, there are many alternative (and free) sources.  Here are a few I highly recommend.

Outplacement Firms; The Outplacement companies are extremely busy these days!  Many of the large firms offer free access to their resume database of talented – yet unemployed professionals. Right Management  - http://www.right.com/global/oursvcs/esolutions/jobbank.htm and Lee Hecht Harrison http://lhhus.careers.adicio.com/careers/user/login are two of the biggest.  I am sure there are smaller regional outplacement firms that offer this service as well.

Social Networking; Linkedin.com has become standard.  However, if you were late to the party and haven’t developed a huge network, there is still a way to tap into this resource of both job seekers and passive candidates.  Go to Google and type in: site: www.linkedin.com and then add your key words.  For example a search strong for call center managers in Florida might look like this: [ site: www.linkedin.com "Call Center" manager florida –directory] This Linkedin ‘hack’ will grant you access to people outside of you immediate network.

Jigsaw http://www.Jigsaw.com is another of my favorite sites.  I do pay a small price for this service but you can search for names of prospective candidates by function, geography, company size, title, etc.  The data includes an email and a company phone number.

Resume Distribution Services are an excellent source for qualified candidates. http://www.resumeviper.com and http://www.resumezapper.com are two that I have used in the past.  However, be careful when you sign up for these services to limit your criteria.  You can find your inbox overflowing.

Associations You can network with great people and even search resume banks through associations.  Most of them are also willing to post your open position as an added benefit to their members.  Peter Weddle’s publishes is a great place to find associations at:  http://www.weddles.com/associations/index.htm.

Niche Job Boards Use niche sites to post jobs and find resumes.  AIRS Directory publishes a comprehensive list of job boards – 110 pages of sites you may have never heard of. Download your free directory here: http://www.airsdirectory.com/mc/training_forms_jobboard.guid.
