Recent surveys indicate that nearly 40% of resumes contain inaccuracies that, if discovered, may have affected the hiring decision.  Due to the tough job market right now, resume fraud is on the rise.  Applicants are tweaking their resumes to make them stand out sometimes using quite a bit of creative license.

Here are some tips for spotting resume fraud:

Review dates carefully.   Applicants who are sloppy with their dates of employment usually have a reason.  Look for gaps in employment and question the applicant thoroughly regarding lapses in employment.  Most likely, an employment gap is legitimate, but better to make sure they were not spending time in jail.

Contact previous employers.   Are most of the applicant's previous employers now out of business?  How convenient.  This can be a big red flag, leaving a potential employer with no one to contact for references.  Make sure to verify prior job titles and listed accomplishments.  Try to confirm their reasons for leaving.  It’s always best to speak with the applicant’s supervisor if possible.

Verify college degrees.  An employer should always verify college degree majors, dates, and schools.  In these days of Photoshop, a diploma is easily faked.  Always make sure the degree is from an accredited school and beware of diploma mills.

Check for criminal records.  The cost for a basic criminal record search by a reputable firm is less than the cost of a day’s work for most entry level positions.  Don’t skip this important step in the hiring process to save a few bucks.  Negligent hiring litigation is a growing problem and statistics show that employers lose 79% of all negligent hiring suits.  And don’t assume that a staffing company or recruiter has conducted an adequate criminal record search.  There is a big difference between a $5.00 instant criminal record database search and a $50.00 real-time criminal records search.  Which one would you choose? 

The bottom line here is that verification of all data that the applicant provides is essential, along with a thorough interview process.  Pre-employment testing including aptitude, personality, and skills tests can also be used to help you to hire the best candidate available.
