In the basic formula, people are a key ingredient.  Most small business owners are "experts" at what they do, but like us all, not experts at everything.  That is why we use CPA's, lawyers and other advisors.

Interesting is that when it comes to HR issues, many take on the mindset of "Oh, I can do that", especially the supposed simple tasks like reviews, interviewing and updating policies and procedures.  What many don't initially realize is the cost and impact of these (and other) areas till it bites them and then it is too late.

Interviewing: In a recent survey, we asked executives how they learned how to interview and the majority stated that it was a combination bits and pieces they picked up from people who interviewed them.  We then asked, "What if they were poor interviewers"? We usually got a blank face.  A "wrong" hire can be a very costly mistake, especially for a small business and it could take months/years to correct that error costing tens of thousands of dollars.  By bringing in a professional interviewer (advisor) for a few hundred dollars, mistakes, bias and surprises can be minimized.  This could make the difference of success or failure for a small business - it deserves greater importance!

Reviews: It is common to out grow some of your people but many owners hang on due to loyalty, hoping things will change.  Furthermore, reviews are often primarily used to measure performance and compensation and have minimal coaching benefits.  Your loyalty can be satisfied by giving your employees the proper coaching so they can grow.  By having the right review process in place and following "Best Practices", you will satisfy your loyalty need and create a system that will enable your people to grow and become a greater asset.

Policies & Procedures: With technology changing everything we do, the copy of your friend's old policy manual just doesn't cut it anymore in 2009.  Two years ago, Social Media was unknown; small integratable devices are now everywhere and with personal and business information becoming more public on line.  These and many more issues must be addressed before a problem arises or if it does, how will the company handle the situation without creating a new liability?  With the speed of change these days, giving your policy and procedures manual a tune up once a year is just smart.
