This time of year reminds me of diversity more than most other times of the year.  Some Christians struggle with the concept of saying “Happy Holidays” versus “Merry Christmas”.  As a Christian who values diversity and inclusion, I prefer saying “Happy Holidays” that way my language includes everyone.  By saying “Happy Holidays”, it doesn’t take away from my beliefs about Jesus’ birthday and being my personal Savior.  It is important for classrooms, stores, and businesses to include decorations from all of the holidays celebrated during this month: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Christmas.  If decorations are up, they should include all of the religions and holidays.

Like diversity in so many other areas, we have to look at the similarities between us and those experiences that bring us together despite our differences.  People are extremely generous at this time of year no matter what religious or spiritual beliefs they practice.  I know Jewish families who do not celebrate Christmas but participate in making sure that children who celebrate Christmas have gifts.  I also know other Jewish families who traditionally on Christmas Day volunteer at churches serving meals, so that all families have great Christmas meals as well.  Additionally, so many people love the beautiful lights and decorations regardless of their personal beliefs and practices. And let’s not forget all of the many festive holiday parties.

I encourage you in the next few weeks to take some time to get to know someone who has a different religion than yourself.  So you can learn something about other people’s faiths and traditions.  This is another way we can bridge the gaps between those of us who are different from one another while appreciating and respecting diversity.  This will help us to all to enjoy what some have called “the most wonderful time of the year.”
