My last posting was sparked by what appears to be our numbness as a society to hate crimes and the large number of organized hate groups that exist in the United States that are based on prejudice and discrimination.  I also highlighted the difference between tolerance, acceptance, appreciation, and inclusion.  Concluding with the concept that the inclusion is about action and the way in which we behave and treat others in our environment. 

As companies and businesses are learning, inclusion is tied to and related to the bottom line of the organization.  If employees feel included in the organization then they will want to stay there and keep producing at high levels.  Therefore, the company costs for recruitment and orientation trainings are kept down.  I have been told that it costs organizations about 1.5 times of an individual's salary to recruit them.  That's a lot of money!!  Additionally, if these people want to stay then companies are able to maintain higher retention numbers.  Thus, increasing the overall productivity of employees within organizations.

Recently, I along with a colleague was invited to serve on a professional committee that was intact prior to our being invited to the committee.  As new comers to the committee when we made suggestions they appeared not to be heard nor were our ideas valued.  Within that initial teleconference she immediately disengaged.  Since then my friend has not been involved in the committee, the process, and has no intentions of doing so.  There are many examples like this that happens on a daily basis within organizations.  This type of stuff happens within departments, teams, and organizations every day.   

Diversity work is not the focus of only those on the Diversity Committee or of people of color within organizations.  It is the responsibility of everyone within the organization.  People have to make sure that their language is inclusive of all; I'm not talking about being politically correct, I'm talking about people being inclusive.  Supervisors need to treat their supervisees with respect.  Research shows that the number 1 reason people leave jobs is based on their supervisor not because of the organization overall or because of being dissatisfied with their salary.  I cannot emphasize enough the importance of relationship building and communications within an organization.  These are all things that impact creating inclusive organizations.
