Here in America most often when we talk about "diversity", race is the element that most of us focus on. And then here is Northeastern Ohio, when we break race down, most people focus on Blacks and Whites. However, diversity is bigger than that; if it were only about race, life would not be as complicated. If we only included people who are Black and White, we are not being inclusive at all thus leaving out about 16% (1,815,029 people) of Ohioans based on the 2000 Census.
When discussing "diversity", we will focus on more than race. We will also cover gender, socio-economics, age, physical ability, religion, and sexual orientation to name a few other aspects of diversity. However, don't be surprised when we address areas of diversity that I consider nontraditional or non-visible.
Often there is no right or wrong answer when discussing diversity and inclusion; there are so many gray areas, it's not so Black and White (no pun intended). As a new contributor for the COSE MindSpring, I'm looking forward to engaging in healthy dialogue and debate about issues in diversity and inclusion with you, the readers.
