Communication killers:
1) Assuming.
2) Avoidance/not dealing with the problem.
3) Failure to clarify.
4) Living on hopium or living on the longest river in the world de’nial. Just because you ignore something doesn’t make it go away. If you continue to ignore problems, they will only have a negative compounding effect.
RECOMMENDATIONS for Improving You Communication:
1) Spell everything out. Be specific and detailed. You can’t be overly simplistic or overly redundant.
2) Openly solicit feedback from others – both positive and negative. Ask for their feedback and make it safe for them to speak openly and candidly. The ugly reality – you’re in an insulated position.
3) Remember the emperor has no clothes. People fear repercussions and consequences.
4) Your interpersonal style is often very different from your employees.
5) Train your staff on the soft skills – which either cement or destroy relationships – and influences profits. No extra associated costs – other than initial training.
6) Reward employees for creating solutions and create a solutions work environment.
7) Continue to evaluate results with measures, formal or informal.
8) Continue to improve your communication skills – it will pay off in ALL aspects of your life.
9) Procrastination only compounds problems.
10) Videotape yourself – you just might be surprised by what you discover. The camera rarely lies and can be as unforgiving as the game of golf.
