Tameka L. Taylor, Ph.D. recently became a Partner & Consultant of her own firm, Compass Consulting Services, LLC located in Northeastern Ohio along with a partner. She does part-time counseling of students and families at Shaker Heights High School as an employee of the Shaker Youth Center since August 1999. Her work continues in an additional capacity with the Youth Center with the MyCom South Shaker Youth Initiative. Additionally, once a week she facilitates a middle school life skills group for Open Doors after-school program. She is preparing to take the Counseling Licensure exam. Tameka recently left The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio (formerly NCCJ) where she served the organization for almost 14 years and the last several as Vice President & Director of Leadership Development. Tameka believes that in order for an organization to perform at their optimal level, employees must feel valued and appreciated despite the differences among them.
She has over 19 years of experience facilitating discussions on diversity issues (race, religion, socioeconomics, physical ability, etc.) for both youth and adults in all sectors. She engages participants in difficult, but honest, conversations around respect and inclusion in the workplace in a non-threatening manner where participants gain awareness and skills. Other areas of expertise are communication, team building, anti-bullying, facilitation skills, and conflict management. While at The Diversity Center, she built the In-school programming and Professional Development from $500 in 2000 to over $100,000 a year. Immediately before leaving Ms. Taylor ran the LeadDIVERSITY program. She oversaw all Program initiatives. She started the Middle School program and launched the LeadDIVERSITY Alumni Association.
Tameka earned her undergraduate degree from Baldwin-Wallace College, her Masters Degrees from Bowling Green State University, and her Ph.D. from Kent State University. Prior to joining the staff at The Diversity Center, she worked at a number of colleges and universities. The schools include Baldwin-Wallace College, Bowling Green University and Mount Union College. Tameka taught graduate level courses at Kent State and Walsh University.
She has been recognized for some of her contributions in the community. In May of 2008, she was a Legacy Plaza Dedication Honoree for Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio. Also she has been recognized by Kaleidoscope Magazine by being inducted into their Forty/Forty Club in March 2007. She's a member of Chi Sigma Iota, National Counseling Honorary in Kent State University. Other awards include: Mark G. Noffsinger Prize (Baldwin-Wallace College), Outstanding Senior Award (Baldwin-Wallace College), and President's Distinguished Service Award (Bowling Green State University).
Tameka believes in giving back to the community and has a passion around youth issues. She serves on the Board for CAP (Celebrating the Arts Performance Academy), Friendly Inn Settlement, and WomenSafe, Inc. She is involved in a research project in the Shaker Heights community. As a community member she is on a few committees including the Cultural Links Committee and Unnatural Causes Planning Committee. Tameka is involved with and has served as an ad-hoc committee for the Diversity Professionals Group for the Commission on Economic Inclusion. She volunteers with Junior Achievement for their Blitz days and St. Clare Catholic School. She is also a Diversity Leadership Team Mentor. At her church she is involved with youth programming, the Missionary Society, and the hunger ministry. She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Anyone who knows her knows she is the proud Mother of her son, Andre' who she loves spending time with and traveling.
